Our History

(CLICK ON THE PICTURE BELOW FOR A SHORT VIDEO)

Iron Tribe was founded by fitness industry veteran, Forrest Walden, back in 2008 in his 400-square-foot garage. Initially, it was just to have a place for Forrest to do group-based workouts with his friends because he couldn’t find anywhere locally that offered the right amount of space and equipment. There was no charge to belong, but you had to have a personal invite.

As more and more friends begged to come and join his garage gym, Forrest began to dream about what it would look like to start a brand-new concept that would take his team-based, group workouts to the next level and allow more lives to be impacted.

The first official Iron Tribe location opened in February of 2010. The response from the community was immediate and overwhelming. In fact, the 250 membership cap was reached in under 8 months with a growing waiting list. That location has operated at max capacity since September of 2010 eventually moving across the street and expanding the location to serve 300 clients.

In fact, the 250 membership cap was reached in under 8 months with a growing waiting list. That location has operated at max capacity since September of 2010 eventually moving across the street and expanding the location to serve 300 clients.

With the goal of franchising the concept from the very beginning, Forrest systematically worked himself out of the business so that he could begin to refine the model and plan the next few locations. Initially starting on the floor, coaching for the first three months, then moving to the manager of the facility for the next three, and eventually moving his office out of the first location within the first 6 months, ensured Forrest that he understood the model operationally and would be ready to duplicate it.

This led Forrest to grow his staff and open the gym’s second location. The ITF Hwy 280 location (located in a suburb of East Birmingham) is considered to be franchise prototype as it is located in a strip center (an “Anywhere, USA model”) and was not dependent on Forrest or the built-in referral base he had built from his garage gym. In fact, Forrest has never coached a class or sold a client in any facility since the first one.

The ITF 280 gym also had an amazing start and within 4 months, Forrest and his growing team began building a humble 400-square-foot “corporate office” to begin laying the groundwork for future expansion and franchising of the model. The success of Iron Tribe’s second gym also proved that a scalable business model and system existed.

Armed with the confidence that the business model could continue to be duplicated and grown, the search for a third location began. However, in this location, the ability to add a corporate office next door was paramount. Creating an “operations-based culture,” where the corporately-owned gyms rank at the top of the chain, ensures a constant involvement in the brand-wide delivery of Iron Tribe’s day-to-day experience.

The third location, ITF Downtown (located in the heart of Birmingham city proper), opened in March of 2012 and has also experienced tremendous success. In fact, it has grown faster than any other ITF location to date. The corporate office is, in fact, next door, and corporate team members can walk over at any point to engage clients in conversation, work with a team member on a new system or just grab a workout in one of the classes!

The very next month after the Downtown gym opened, ITF Mountain Brook, AL opened up its doors as the fourth location. Following the lead of the three other locations, this location grew quickly and is routinely in the top 10 locations in the brand every year.

Operating now five corporately-owned locations in Birmingham plus a location in Louisville, gives amazing insight into the model and how it can be continually evolved. What this means for franchisees is that there is no “ivory tower” corporate office environment, where the ITF Corporate Team is out of touch with those operating a franchise in the system. Anything passed down to franchisees is tested and proven in corporately-owned gyms first. Best demonstrated practices and marketing plans will be refined and maximized before they’re ever systematized as an official part of the model.

Why ITF?

As more and more friends begged to come and join his garage gym, Forrest began to dream about what it would look like to start a brand-new concept that would take his team-based, group workouts to the next level and allow more lives to be impacted.

The first official Iron Tribe location opened in February of 2010. The response from the community was immediate and overwhelming. That location has operated at max capacity since September of 2010 eventually moving across the street and expanding the location to serve 300 clients.

What makes Iron Tribe Fitness not just another gym?

The culture, not the equipment, is your advantage! Big gyms (those utilitarian facilities boating they have all the equipment, amenities, and bells and whistles members could ever hope for), can be found in every market. Walk in and what do you see? A sea of equipment from wall to wall. What do you experience? A pushy sales person looking for a quick commission who could not care less if you ever walk through the doors again. How do you feel? You feel strangely alone. The big-box gym model, and the smaller 24-hour type fitness models are built to sell thousands of memberships per location, and is designed to serve only a fraction of that number on a daily and monthly basis.

What people crave is a TRIBE!

If there is one truth in fitness it’s this: Merely functional, a gym is forgettable. That’s why thousands may join a gym and only have a few hundred active users. Under this investment model, success is not based on member participation, rather it’s based on total sales volume. Which, by the way, is the reason so few members remain consistent in their workouts.

Contrast the utilitarian gym model with Iron Tribe’s team training model, and you’ll notice a stark difference. In ITF’s culture, every individual is treated with the respect of a star athlete. When a new member joins, our cultivation process showers them in coaching, encouragement and support. Every member, from the newest to the experienced client, knows they are a valued member of the team.

Iron Tribe is more than a gym. We are a tribe of members. our team training model places each member square in the middle of the action. No one is left out. No one feels alone. Everyone knows they are cared for. Our workouts are designed to be intense (but not too intense) and competitive (but only in a good way). It’s in this environment, in this culture, that Iron Tribe Fitness is able to transform bodies faster than anything you’ve ever experienced.

This team training environment creates a unified atmosphere, and a culture of, “We’re all in this together, we’re struggling together, and we’ll all get through this together.” It’s one of the oldest truisms in the book… When people struggle together, they bond together. They become friends. They become a team. They become a family forged through sweat and effort.

They become a TRIBE!

When it comes to clients fitness journey’s, they shouldn’t have to settle for a cookie-cutter approach. That’s why ITF is proud to offer the dynamic PRIME Semi Private Training Program.

This program will set clients up for success with a tailored fitness routine, customized nutrition coaching, and hands on instruction that can help them see real results in no time. This semi private setting offers 5-person classes so that you can enjoy individualized coaching each class.

From day one in this system, our whole focus is on the client. We’re here to find out what goals they have in mind and we’re here to help them make those goals happen.

The PRIME Semi Private Training program starts with an assessment of the clients current fitness level and their focus for the future. From there, you will offer a customized workout routine that will challenge that person with dynamic strength and cardio workouts on the way to sustainable success.

At Iron Tribe Fitness, your team of instructors are committed to helping each client get the most out of every movement. That’s why each and every session will be tailored to their skill set, helping them stay challenged and supported through every single exercise.

You will also offer access to a tailored nutrition plan that uses the clients fitness goals as a guide to help them get the most out of their body.

Our core programming for over 10 years, the POWER program is the ultimate mix of strength training, weightlifting, cardio, gymnastics, and all-around butt-kicking intensity! This program takes great advantage of one of the most amazing strengths and conditioning tools ever created – the barbell. With a focus of improving strength in movements like the squat, deadlift, bench and overhead press, we can build muscle while scorching fat and improving metabolism. We also look to improve power with olympic weightlifting movements and their countless variations.

Neverthirst and Workout for Water

Click on the picture below for a video on the history of ‘neverthirst’ and Iron Tribe Fitness ‘Workout for Water’

Iron Tribe W4W Origin Story

Iron Tribe created a movement when it established Workout for Water (W4W) in 2010. Since that time they have raised over $6,000,000 for Neverthirst which has in turn helped over 200,000 people with the gift of clean and living water. Forrest co-founded Neverthirst in 2008.

About Neverthirst:

Over 771 million people lack access to clean water, and 4 in 10 people lack access to the gospel and are considered unreached. When you give clean water, you ‘re providing:

A hope-filled future for families

The chance for kids to grow up and go to school

Restored time for women who walk miles for water

A platform for the gospel to go where Jesus is currently unknown

At neverthirst, we are in a mulit-year approach to saturate entire regions with clean and living water. Instead of serving various communities in one country, we’ve identified 14 regions with urgent and massive need for clean water and the gospel.

Together, we can see thousands of families no longer worry about having safe drinking water that is accessible. We invite you to partner alongside us to saturate these regions with clean water and see churches equipped and empowered to reach their own.

Since 2008, we’ve helped over 1,000,000 people gain access to clean and living water. And we are just getting started.
